# ClickHouse

> ClickHouse 26.8 for analytics, with 26.3 kept for existing databases.

> [!TIP]
>
> **Live.** This area is documented as current, user-reliable behavior.

## Goal

Create a ClickHouse database for analytics and connect over HTTPS or the native protocol.

## Prerequisites

* A StackShift account
* A ClickHouse client or driver

## Workflow

**Step 1**

Create a database and choose ClickHouse. New databases use 26.8.

**Step 2**

Connect over HTTPS or the native protocol with the details from the database page.

**Step 3**

Create MergeTree tables for your data and check inserts with a `SELECT count()`.

## Versions

* 26.8 is a long-term support release and the default for new databases.
* 26.3 stays available for databases that already run it.

## Backups

ClickHouse databases are backed up automatically with full and incremental backups. A restore creates a new database and leaves the original unchanged.

## Expected result

> [!TIP]
>
> Your client connects and queries return data.

## Common failures

> [!WARNING]
>
> * Connection refused on the native port from outside StackShift: private endpoints only accept connections from your apps; turn on public access for a laptop session.
