# Edit videos in Video Studio

> Trim, crop, resize, overlay, extract audio and create poster frames before packaging video for delivery.

## Goal

Save a video edit, audio extract or poster and inspect the result before delivery.

## Prerequisites

* Sign in to Stackshift and select the Assets space you want to work in.
* Your role must permit the actions you perform in that space.

## Workflow

<Steps>
  <Step>
    Choose a source video in Video Studio.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    Arrange edits and choose the output type.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    Generate a processor preview, then render the full output.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    Inspect Saved renders and prepare the video for playback.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Choose a source and understand the two previews

Open Video Studio and select a video from your library or samples. Playground also opens video editing through Frame a video, Rotate a video, Round video corners and Edit a video. Source selection brings the video into the editor; it does not itself re-encode the file.

The original player lets you inspect the source. The five-second processor preview shows the editing pipeline’s result for a short portion. Use the compare control to distinguish the original from the processed preview. After changing the recipe, generate a new preview before judging those changes.

## Trim and arrange edits

Add Trim start and end to define the segment you want to keep. Use source duration and the original player to select sensible boundaries. Add crop, resize, rotate, round corners, image overlay or text as needed. Move operations using the up/down controls; Remove deletes that edit from the recipe.

A portrait product clip can start with a trim, then crop and resize, then a logo overlay. Adding the logo before the crop can remove part of it. The editor permits up to 24 operations and prevents incompatible edit choices for the selected output kind. Use Undo, Redo and Reset to compare recipes.

## Choose video, audio or a poster frame

Video · MP4 renders moving footage. Choose Compact, Balanced or High quality according to your size/quality needs. Remove audio produces a silent output. Set the background color for effects that require an opaque background, including rounded video corners.

Extract audio creates an audio output using the offered format. Visual edits are not offered for audio-only output. Poster frame creates a still image at the configured point rather than exporting the entire clip. Preview and inspect each kind with its appropriate viewer.

## Preview, render and recover

Run the processor preview before starting a full render. A short preview can confirm framing, text placement and output behavior, but it does not replace watching the finished video from beginning to end.

Start the full render once settings are correct and follow the job status. Cancel an active job when the edit is no longer needed. If status becomes unavailable, retry the status request instead of assuming rendering failed. Saved renders lists completed results by format and creation time. Select one to inspect or open it.

## Reuse video templates

Reusable templates save the ordered video recipe and configurable inputs. Load the correct media-type template, adjust its exposed fields, save changes before publishing, and duplicate when you need a separate version for another format. Batch sources use the same recipe on each selected input.

Test trim boundaries and framing on representative inputs before a batch. A recipe designed for a landscape ten-second clip can need different settings for a short portrait source. See [templates and batch behavior](/assets/image-studio-and-templates) for the shared template controls.

## Prepare delivery and design the player

Editing, packaging and player appearance are separate steps. Video Studio creates the edit. Native video processing creates delivery renditions such as HLS and MP4. Player Studio configures controls, branding and playback preferences; it does not change the video’s encoded pixels.

Continue with [video processing and playback](/assets/video-scanning-and-governance), then [Player Studio profiles](/assets/player-studio-profiles). Attach captions to the intended video version and test the final embed. Live streaming is outside this workflow.
